Baby’s First fruits


No doubt, the past generations were introduced to solids much earlier than we introduce solids to our infants these days. According to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), babies should only be breast-fed and/or formula fed and healthy babies do not need water/juice until solids are introduced.  They get all the fluids they need from the breast milk and/or formula.

Babies love the sweet taste of fruits. Some fruit needs to be first cooked and then puree before offering to baby’s such as apple, pear, etc.  Others can be just mashed and given to babies.  For example, mangoes and bananas do not need to be cooked first. Ones baby’s adjusted to one fruit for at least four days a new food can be introduced. Also, mild herbs and spices, say mint, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc., can also be added to enhance the flavor of a fruit if you wish. When it came to choose the first fruit, we choose apples for our daughter.

Age Group: 6 months +                                                       


3-4 Apples

Cinnamon powder (Optional)


  1. Wash and cut apples into quarters. Remove the core.
  2. Simmer apple quarters in VERY little water until tender.
  3. Let cool the apples, peel and either mash or puree depending on the age of your child.
  4. Offer as is, or add to yogurt and/or oatmeal.

Notes : 

 i.  Instead of simmering, the apples can be baked in 350 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes depending on size and oven temperature.

ii.  Apple belongs to the “dirty dozen” family, so I would recommend peeling them before simmering if not using organic apples. I use all organic produce for the baby and peel the apple skin after cooking to retain more nutrition.

iii.   Following the same process, other fruits such as pears, plums, peaches, etc. can be puree.

iv.   I do not add additional water in the food processor, but can be added if necessary.

v.   Apple puree freezes very well.


Baby’s First Vegetables

 One full weekend..yes an entire Saturday and Sunday. That’s what my husband and I  spent researching, stressing and thinking about what to introduce our little angel as her first solid. Should it be rice cereal, fruit or veggie?

We knew we want to start between 4.5 and 5 months and want to feed her organic, homemade meals – those were the easy decisions but was immensely confused about what to introduce first. After going through loads of articles, books we took the safest route and started with rice cereal. Once she adjusted to rice cereal, we introduced one veggie puree a week until she was six months old.

Butternut squash puree was the first vegetable we introduced when the baby was 6 months old. Pretty much all her vegetables were smooth puree until she turned eight months. We introduced a food every 5-6 days and always made sure she had tried each ingredient separately before offering combination meals.

1 Butternut Squash


  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Line a baking tray with parchment paper
  2. Clean and cut the squash in half and scoop out seeds.
  3. Place squash, flesh down, on the baking sheet and bake for 50-60 minutes until tender.
  4. Scoop flesh out or cut into cubes. Discard skin and puree in blender

Notes :

i.  Depending on the size of the squash and oven temperature, the baking time may vary. Squash is done when the skin wrinkles.

ii.  Use water and/or breast milk/formula to achieve desired consistency.

iii. Following the same process, other vegetables such as carrots, beans, peas, corn, cauliflower, sweet potato can be pureed.


I traveled alone as a young girl to learn, study, and understand the diverse, multicultural society of the United States. Once I was out of college, I wasn’t afraid to enter the corporate world or trot the globe as a consultant and managed some pretty complex global project. So when we were expecting our baby girl, I thought I got this. Huh!! Little did I know. I constantly question myself, feel disorganized and fear whether I will be able to raise a happy, healthy and hopeful child or teach my daughter about family values, loyalty, love, and strength above all to help her become a compassionate and successful human being.

I am by no means an expert or an amazing mom but I want to learn. In my opinion, success rests upon the ability to push oneself to her highest level, and I am trying my best to be a better mom all at the same time not forgetting my other roles – a wife, a daughter, a sister, a career women and a God-loving human being. I have decided to delve into the cyber world documenting what I love about family and life and hoping to connect with others through our stories and passion in this journey as I know there’s gotta be few others with similar aspire and hopes.


Life in today’s busy, fast-paced modern world can be complicated. Just think about what many of us are responsible for on a given day – managing household duties, going to work, shopping for groceries, preparing and serving meals to our family, doing laundry, paying bills, and much more. I am not even mentioning the full-time mommy job some of us have. The bottom line is everyone is stretched thin and it gets thinner by the day. Where is the time to slow down to celebrate & enjoy daily life, which is so important.

I am no expert but passionate about design, décor, and do-it-yourself projects. I feel having an understanding of the domestic arts gives a sense of control over life. Transforming the drab into the fab without breaking the bank is my motto when I am painting, crafting, entertaining or even traveling. I wish to share some of the projects and stories and learn your route to fabulous for less at the same time.


It’s magical to throw few basic ingredients and watch in awe the outcome. To me cooking is an explosion of creativity. Cooking is as close as I can get to express my creative side in everyday life. The ability to improve and find an easier way to an old recipe, or experimenting with different ethnic recipes yet adding a desi spin to it, excites me. I prefer to keep recipes simple, healthy, yet delicious to eat and enjoy with others. The Eat section is a pool of recipes I have mastered over the years.

I would like my daughter to enjoy not just Bangladeshi or South Asian cuisine but appreciate other ethnic culinary as well. The “Baby Friendly” section features recipes I have been preparing and feeding my one year old since she started solids.

“Semi-homemade” highlights recipes with laborious steps which have been modified to prepare in somewhat straightforward steps, by using pre-made ingredients, without giving up taste or flavor.  I mostly use freshly grinded or blended spices and do not like the store bought prepackaged blended spices.  Recipes in this category still uses  my homemade spice mixes.

All other recipes belong to the “From Scratch” section.

All categories contain recipe ideas from different parts of the world. Some are as is, and rest by adding some spicy flare, the way desis’ like it. Browse through the collection of these recipes, whip up some and let me know how it turned out for you.

Welcome to With A Spin.

I  feel a distinct pleasure in being a part of a multicultural society.  As I have attempted to make friendships with people from different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, I find myself enriched by the process.  When I read, travel, or talk to others, I realize that nearly every issue we face in our day-to-day lives has been solved somewhere, by someone.

I deeply value the life lessons I continue to learn from my family, friendships, jobs, and other extracurricular activities. My father taught me the important aspect of what is to be comfortable in our changing world and to recognize in what direction it is going.  As a South Asian descendent, I cherish the rich traditions, heritage, family values and culture. At the same time, I am not afraid to embrace parts of western culture and leave the worst part of both behind. As we spread our wings in the different parts of the world we stumble upon similar dilemma in every aspect of life and don’t always know how to go about it.

The goal of this blog is to share, inspire and empower others to tackle and celebrate everyday life by exchanging ideas and solutions to everyday life that helped someone somewhere. I am also hoping to connect with others through our stories, passion in this journey.
